A weight distribution hitch helps redistribute tongue weight—but it does not strengthen your truck's rear suspension. With an Airstream's substantial tongue weight, a soft rear suspension may still squat, bounce, and porpoise even when the hitch is properly adjusted.

When the truck's rear suspension compresses too easily, owners may add more hitch tension in an effort to level the truck. This can transfer more weight than necessary away from the rear axle and toward the truck's front axle and trailer—without addressing the lack of rear suspension control.
RAS strengthens the rear leaf springs so the truck can better support and control the tongue weight. This allows the weight distribution hitch to focus on distributing the load instead of compensating for an under-supported rear suspension.

RAS does not replace a weight distribution hitch. Your WDH redistributes tongue weight across the towing setup, while RAS strengthens and controls the truck's rear leaf springs. The two systems perform different, complementary jobs.
Yes. Because RAS changes how the rear suspension responds to tongue weight, your weight distribution hitch should be checked and adjusted after installation according to the hitch and vehicle manufacturers' specifications.
Airbags use adjustable air pressure to lift and support the rear of the truck. RAS mechanically strengthens the leaf springs and responds progressively as the load changes—with no air lines, compressors, pressure adjustments, or ongoing maintenance.
RAS is designed to remain active without creating the harsh, abrupt engagement associated with some traditional helper-spring solutions. It helps improve rear-suspension control while maintaining a comfortable everyday driving experience.
