Airbags vs RAS: What Happens to Weight Distribution

Airbags vs RoadActive Suspension: What Actually Happens to Weight Distribution?

Leveling your truck isn’t the same as fixing weight distribution.

A lot of suspension upgrades can make your truck look level under load—but what’s actually happening underneath tells a very different story.

The real question isn’t “does it remove squat?” — it’s where is the weight going?

What Happens When You Add Tongue Weight

When you hook up a trailer, weight is transferred off the front axle and onto the rear axle of your truck.

  • Rear axle gains significant load
  • Front axle becomes lighter
  • Steering and braking performance can suffer

This is true even before adding any suspension upgrades.

What Airbags Actually Do

Airbags are designed to push the rear of the truck back up to a level position. But they don’t redistribute weight—they simply support it from underneath the frame.

Testing conducted by Fastway Trailers

In controlled testing, inflating airbags to level the truck resulted in:

  • Rear axle weight increased (+135 lbs)
  • Front axle weight decreased (-25 lbs)

Even though the truck looked level, more weight was actually concentrated on the rear axle, while the front axle lost load.

Airbags can fix the appearance of squat — but they can worsen weight distribution.

As noted in the test, leveling the truck with airbags did not restore weight to the front axle, which can impact steering and braking performance.

How RoadActive Suspension Compares

RoadActive Suspension works differently. Instead of lifting the truck from underneath, it applies a progressive tension force through the leaf spring system.

Independent testing conducted at the Transportation Research Center (TRC)

In independent testing at 99% of max payload capacity:

  • Front axle weight increased slightly (+10 lbs)
  • Rear axle weight decreased slightly (-10 lbs)

Instead of shifting more weight rearward, the system maintained a neutral to slightly improved balance across the vehicle.

RoadActive Suspension doesn’t just level your truck — it helps maintain proper weight balance under load.

Why This Matters

Weight distribution directly impacts how your truck performs:

  • Steering control
  • Braking performance
  • Stability at highway speeds
  • Overall driver confidence

A level truck with poor weight distribution can still feel unstable. A properly balanced truck feels planted and controlled.

The Bottom Line

Not all suspension upgrades work the same way.

  • Airbags can level your truck but may increase rear axle load
  • Weight distribution hitches actively redistribute load across axles
  • RoadActive Suspension helps maintain a more balanced system under load

If your goal is better control—not just better appearance—how your suspension manages weight matters.
